How Bora Bora was formed

The island of Bora Bora surfaced from the sea like a great volcano 3 million years ago, and around it has grown coral ring. Miniature coral polyps live in the stone shells secreted by using the calcium that draw from shallow tropical sea. Stone shields of one collony of polyps grow slowly and so created the reef.

As the oceanic crust cooled, the volcano began to sink, and the coral is still continued to grow, so that the island and lagoon remain within the ring of coral reef. In time, the island will disappear and will remain only atoll, this means a lagoon surrounded by coral reefs.
