The tie – cravat, as a symbol of sophistication and culture, originates from the Croats. The Croats are in their own way tied colorful scarves around their necks. The “Croatian style” won the fastidious Parisians and they have adopted new fashion item worn “a la Croate”!

Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest minds in history (and probably the greatest mind), was a Croat born in Lika (in Croatia) as the son of rural Orthodox priest. On the occasion of the celebration of the Croatian accession to the EU on the square in Zagreb is set Tesla coil, the invention is presented as an extremely Croatian creativity.

Game of Thrones

“Game of Thrones” are filmed in Dubrovnik, in the fortress Minceta. The city of Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century (about 614) after the Avars and Slavs destroyed the Roman city of Epidaurus (today’s Cavtat). The survivors were moved to a small island located 25 km north of Cavtat called Laus. It is assumed that the Croats carried out the second attack on the city of Epidaurum and completely destroyed it.

Dalmatian dog

Dalmatian (dog) is the breed that was named after Dalmatia (Region and Croatia). It is unique for its black spots on a white coat. Historical records show that the earls Zrinski and Frankopan used in the hunting, including in the fight against the Turks. Today Dalmatian dog is exclusively a pet, immortalized in the hit of Walt Disney “101 Dalmatians”.

Maraschino liqueur

Admiring the sunset in Zadar, Alfred Hitchcock was drinking Maraschino liqueur, which were once drunk only privileged. This liquor, which is now famous in the world, is made of cherries and leaves of its sprigs. Its recipe was for the first time written in the early 16th century in Dominican monastery in Zadar.

Istrian truffle

Giant truffle of 1,31 kilograms is discovered by Giancarlo Zigante 1999 in the Mirna valley. As the largest truffle in the world, entered the Guinness Book of Records, and is estimated at 5,000 dollars. This bulbous fungus is up to 30 cm below ground. Truffles are known as black and white gold. A kilo of truffles worth much and reaches a staggering price of 3,000 euros.

Hum – the smallest town in the world

Hum is known as the smallest town in the world. It is located in central Istria, with a population of some 20 inhabitants. Legend says it was built by giants of stones which they rest as they build larger cities.
