What Do Bones Contain That Makes Them Strong

Firmness of normal, healthy human bones is amazing. Bones must be strong, because they form the skeleton and on it relies the entire body. Bones vary in shape and size, depending on the type of animal to which they belong. Fish and small birds have small bones. Elephant has bones that are weighing several hundred pounds!

All the bones are of similar composition. Bone is a hard, grayish-white color; two thirds of the bone tissue consisting of an inorganic or mineral materials, particularly lime phosphate. This gives hardness to the bones, but they at the same time makes it brittle. The remaining third of the bones makes organic matter. It gives bones strength and resistance to fracture. The center of the bone is spongy and filled with bone marrow.

In one part of the bone marrow was stored fats, in another part of the marrow are blood cells. In the bones is situated a small amount of water, which, with the aging of the organism, gradually disappears. What is in the bones less water, it is the amount of minerals higher, causing bones to become brittle and after break to slowly coalesce.

Did you know; the combination of calcium and collagen gives the bone its strength and flexibility.

What does calcium do for bones?

Strong bonesThe body of the average person contains about 1.5 kg of calcium. The major part of the calcium is in the bones as a major part of the bone.

Bone structure can be compared with reinforced concrete. Kost has fibers which are called collagen fibers, similar to the flexible and iron wires that are placed in reinforced concrete. Calcium makes the mass of which are surrounded by collagen fibers.

The amount of calcium in our bones changes with age. During the first year of life the child’s bones contain very little calcium and are very flexible. A child can be bent in all directions without breaking any bones.

When man has 80 years, bones may contain almost 80 percent of calcium, and are breakable easily. We give small children to drink plenty of milk, among other things, because the milk is very rich in calcium, and young body needs a lot of calcium. One liter of cow’s milk contains more than 1,5 g calcium. Cheese, cream and yogurt also contain high amounts of calcium.

In those parts of the world where the food does not have enough calcium people do not have healthy teeth and often suffer from bone fractures.
